Got what I wanted for X-Mas!
Now I can start making molds and doing casting! No more tracking down duplicate fodder of obscure parts... no more hesitance to use a cool, unique piece of fodder when I have multiple ideas for it... now I can make molds and cast as many as I want!
Oh, and now I can try more sculpting and mold/ cast my own original stuff! This could open up loads of possibilities... including sales of customs! [img]wink.gif[/img]
I can't wait to start working with this... I'm doing lots of reading and research on resin casting this evening, and gonna mold/cast my first piece tomorrow! Gotta decide what... I want to make sure I do it the best possible way first. But practice makes perfect, and I don't have an air chamber to suck out all the air bubbles, so I've been reading all kinds of tips and methods to do it the best ways.
OH - and went back to the folks' house, and they got me this:

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I can make the rubber molds, but this kit only comes with a two part resin to fill. You can buy plastic two-part mix, but I guess it is more volatile to the molds, as the plastic heats up (not sure if they make an RTV plastic... that's room-temp vulcanizing, which doesn't heat up... the resin is RTV).Originally posted by Chosen One:

Supposedly, the rubber can do plastic, but you're safer with the high-temp rubber compounds, and that stuff costs a bit more... you can also pour lower temp metals into it for casting. This kit is more ideal for resin casting.

[img]smile.gif[/img] Funny you should mention it, because I just decided to start with a one piece mold...
That Klean Klay that it comes with is a synthetic clay for just that purpose, and for creating mold walls, etc. It is non-contaminate containing, as I guess some clays can cause issues with the rubber compund curing properly.
Anyhow, I had a spawn logo from the 10th Anniversary shoulder clips (the flat classic skull), and I wanted dupes of that, so I glued a plastic rod to it, and pressed it into a black of that clay, and just mixed and pured my first batch of resin into it to test it out.
(Not gonna get my stepson into it just yet, as he's asleep, and he's only 5... not quite into it just yet)
It's just starting to set now, it's got about another half hour before I can pull it. I did forget to spray mold release on the clay beforehand though, so I may have an issue there, but shouldn't be too bad. I did notice some air bubble form as it heated up... that weren't there at first (I poured it from about 18" away to a thin stream as instructed to alleviate air bubbles, then hit the table around it to push any air up). I only made a small experiment batch, so it should be interesting to see what happens. Once I get it down a bit, then I'm gonna make a simple one part mold with the rubber... I'm gonna find some flat backed parts that I want dupes of, like pouches, etc., and lay them on a piece of plastic and then build walls and pour the rubber. Then I'll cast that and see. Once I get it down, I'll tackle a two-part mold.

I really need to look into how difficult it would be to make a homemade vacuum chamber... I've seen a few guys' websites where they put some together... might be worth the effort in the longrun. I'm gonna tinker for a bit first, so how bad the air bubble issue is, and if it becomes a problem. I did find one tip for the one part mold... if you spray some of the mold release on the top surface once you've poured, it brings the little bubbles to the top and pops them... and I did that, and it seemed to do the trick! This is a really thin mold, so we'll see how well it goes.
